The Census Bureau recently reported an increase in the poverty rate, estimating that 46.2 million people are now living in poverty in the United States. Twenty two percent of children live in poverty in this country. The wage gap has persisted at 77 cents on the dollar for women, and men continue to lose access to employment at more than twice the rate of women.
Our work aims to de-stigmatize and assist those living in poverty access services, promote an appropriately nuanced and informed conversation about poverty, and motivate policymakers to take strong action to alleviate poverty in communities.
For example, Yorkville Common Pantry not only is the largest provider of free groceries to the greater New York area, the organization also offers nutrition courses, cooking classes, job-seeking consultation, assistance with matching eligibility to public programs, and other holistic approaches to alleviating hunger and poverty.
The poor are often stigmatized and policies too often are punitive rather than empowering. For example, the five-year ban on access to public services such as food stamps for new immigrants with legal residency status creates cruel structural barriers to thriving in the United States.
